Boys’ Brigade and Scout

Can anyone tell me what uniform groups they belogs to? i bet most of u will say this is scout. Are they really scout?, Now see the picture below:

This picture clearly shows the BB Anchor on the belt and hat. So are they scout or BB?(pic taken approximately during year 1910- 3rd Enfield coy)

Scouting was a BB activity from 1909 until 1927. since 1909, BB scout uniform was introduced with a BB scout badge.

This is how a BB scout badge looks like, A combination of BB logo and Scout logo. Both of this 2 logo were still using by BB and Scout differently. There’s silver and gold level for this badge.

Do you Know?

  • Sir william alexander smith(BB founders) and Major General R.S.S. Baden-Powell (Scout Founder) are good friends
  • Major General R.S.S. Baden-Powell(scout founder) was BB Brigade secretary then Honorary Vice-President of the Brigade in 1903

How Baden-powell get to know BB – Back in history

Major-General R S S Baden-Powell was a national hero when on the Friday 8th May 1903, he attended the London BB demonstration at the Royal Albert Hall. As Honorary Vice-President of the Boys’ Brigade from 1903 it was envitable that he would come into contact with many BB Boys.

In 1904, he reviewed the 700 strong Glasgow Battalion and suggested in his speech that some form of Scout training would be popular in the Brigade. Sir William Smith, founder of the BB in 1883, who was admired by Baden-Powell, asked Baden-Powell to adapt his miilitary handbook “Aids to Scouting” for the training of Boys. By 1906, it was reported in the BB Gazette that Baden-Powell had placed at the disposal of the BB the manuscript of a paper on “Scouting for Boys”.

Various extracts from the paper were reprinted. A year later Baden-Powell organised the famous “experimental camp” on Brownsea Island attended by twenty boys: ten from public schools and ten from the Boys’ Brigade; Seven boys from the 1st Bournemouth Company and three from the 1st Poole Company. The BB supplied the equipment for the Brownsea Island Camp. Baden-Powell would often tour the country selling his Scouting idea assisted by BB. Scouting became a BB activity.

The picture below shows the tight relationship between Boys’ Brigade and Scout movement.

Now u know, Boys’ Brigade and Scout are FRIENDS! ^_^

  1. Ray Hampton Said,

    To whom it may concern,

Both of your photos are Boys Brigade Scouts – first mentioned in the magazine Tip Top Tales produced by Pearsons Publications and later in a Magazine produced by the Brotherhood of British Scouts ‘Chums’

The were also members who were called Life Brigade Boy Scouts.. and varying other groups associations that joined – Peace Scouts. ‘Brotherhood of British Scouts’ – BBS -around 1912 – After the considerations of the Boy Scouts possibly being a little militarist – They Celebrate 100 Years of Scouting this year.
